BEND, OR -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture
announced yesterday that nine Oregon and California counties in the
Klamath Basin will be declared a natural disaster area. The designation
will open up low interest loans from the federal government. The heavily
agricultural Klamath Basin area has been wracked by severe drought since
March, affecting several crops including onions, potatoes and grains.
